Artificial Eye Linked to Brain Implant == Sight

Now this is amazing Technology, forget that new device driver for your silly USB Mr. Coffee. The Dobelle Institute (a medical device company in New York) has achieved rudimentary artificial sight! The current system includes sunglasses which have camera and rangefinder and a hip based wearable computer that processes the images. Thats all the normal stuff, the remarkable part is the the electrode attachment that carries the output of the computer directly to cells in the brain! This system is in use on a patient who actually received the brain implant in 1978! They have been refining the camera and software since. This technology currently allows a 68 year old man (who has been blind since he was 36) to distinguish light and images in a restricted type of "tunnel vision."The system sounds rudimentary now, but is still remarkable. Further advances in technology will allow much more range of sight and improved depth perception. The company plans to sell the devices in Europe possibly later this year (the US us still a ways off.) WOW, thats technology at work!Check the ABCNews link for more details.   ABCNews Eye Implant Story
