Screaming Penguin - Source Does Matter

RedHat announces a new "developer" training and certification program and alliance with Global Knowledge. This progam is great news on the Linux cert front as a whole. However, I personally would like to see a non-vendor specific Linux certification, which there has been much ado about, but no clear path has yet emerged. Any strides in the cert direction are welcomed as it is surely needed, but we still have a long way to go. Mini Rant . . .With Linux certification we must provide real, recognized, respected certifications. The psuedo-cert world that M$ has employed for its products will not do. The main purpose of being M$ certified (MCP, MCSE, MCSD, MCDBA, whatever) seems to be to saturate the world with Microsoft "professionals" and products and to get those who are certified innundated with M$ subscription and product offers. The focus is not technical expertise at all. Microsofts certification programs and subsequent innundation with M$ materials and events are just another revenue stream, not a "benefit" to the certified. The goal of the M$ program seems to be - make the test very easy so that masses will get certified - therefore blanketing the market with an army of M$ "professionals" - and then market a ton of products and seminars to them at substsantial cost and profit. Nowhere in the mix is technical acumen a priority. Lets hope the Linux community can avoid marketing-psuedocert and provide real tests and real certifications, someday.
