Federal Computer Week, "your government IT resource", all the while serving up ASP pages (I wont even get into any of those multiple ironies) has an article reviewing Linux backup tools such as BRU and PerfectBackup+.
This story is no revelation about anything either way, and its not a particularly useful review by any means. Not even any real info, except this gem "Backup is a mission-critical capability for most government IT shops. Without it, you have no way to recover from a disk failure or to restore those inadvertently deleted files", I wonder what the other shops that dont fall into the most category do, maybe they use that govt Roswell backup stuff that is still top secret? And thanks for the tip about backups, now I know what they are for!
Excessive sarcasm aside what struck me as odd was that the government "IT Resource" author(s) are reviewing products that they cannot even install ("Unfortunately, we were not able to get either package up and running without help from technical support staff"!) How much credence do you put into the writer of an article not being capable of clicking on setup (which is pretty much literally the case with BRU, it runs an "installshield" script and then is a GUI Xwin app, PerfectBackup I know nothing about, still, even after reading the article.) This one is interesting for the source and surrounding factors alone, but not for the content.
Of course, probably our tax dollars hard at work again paying for this site. Linux Backup Tools Reviewed: fcw.com
