Yesterday was Juneteenth, June 19th. One of the most significant dates in American history (although it doesnt get that much attention). June 19th 1865 Union soldiers marched into Galveston Texas and announced that per President Abraham Lincolns proclamation they slaves were free. This was 2 years AFTER the proclamation.
This country certainly does still have some racial issues and tensions, but we have come a very long way in 140 years.
The fact that any people, anywhere, anytime could have "slaves" is astounding to me and yet throughout history many races and cultures have participated in slavery. Both black and white and every other color people have had slaves and been slaves.
Juneteenth is cause for celebration of freedom for all people and for celebration that we as a nation were wise enough to recognize the rights of all races. http://www.juneteenth.com/
