Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.
You know what is some extra special Bushit this time around, the new talking points that ""If we leave Iraq there will be chaos, there will be genocide, and they will follow us home." To all of those that have uttered that crap in the last 2 days, including Bush, Cheney, Rice, and McCain, fuck you you disengenious jackasses.
They all know that statement is crap, they are of course lying to scare people when they say that (which I guess works, it has been the Republican MO for a decade now, you better be scared bitch, and the Dems are pussies).
The terrorists, specifically al Qaeda (not the Catholics and Protestants in the UK, or Christians bombing abortion clinics in the US, or Chechens, or Fark, or etc, you get the idea - we toss around the term "terrorist" as if it only applies to Arabs) to get back into FACT land, were never in Iraq BEFORE the invasion and occupation. The recent National Intelligence Estimate confirms this (as does a ton of other evidence). And the NIE also states that the continued US presence in Iraq is exacerbating the situation and making more people pissed - more terrorists. This years NIE repeats what last years said, and then some. Leaving Iraq won't be easy at any time, and there are things to debate, but "follow us home" is just bullshit, it's not one of the things we should be debating.
Now this is not to say there will not be attacks on American soil in the future, there will be, not if, when. But our presence in Iraq has FUELED THE FIRE and made things worse, from the get go, it has not helped, it is not helping, it WONT help. There is not some finite amount of turban wearing mujahadeen we are fighting, there is no "kill em all", its an ideology, a culture (which the US actions are playing right into).
Now either the politicians know this, and have read the NIE, and are complete fucking liars . . . or they are complete fucking dumbasses. Take your pick, either way they should not be leading a Safeway, much less a nation.
Oh, and as it turns out anybody who even remotely considered the situation BEFORE the war knew that Iraq was just going to create more terrorism, that was even one of the chief reasons some assholes were against it from the start (along with unjustified, sovereign nation, defiance of UN and yet using UN as a reason, destablization of region, destruction of clout/standing in the world it would surely create for the US, etc.).
Just read your 2002 post. When you said "because of the presence of weapons of mass destruction in COMBINATION with a history of aggression AND violations of UN rulings"...
Did you mean Iraq or Israel?
