The Wireless LAN: IEEE 802.11 (updated)

The new wireless standard for Ethernet type networking IEEE 802.11 has recently won admiration and awards. This new technology is capable of using multiple frequencies within a certain range to provide speeds in the 10MBPS+ neighborhood to wireless devices of all types. Check the link for spec details. As far as I am concerned this is great news but it kinda goes without saying doesnt it? I thought everybody knew Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum Radio PHY, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Radio PHY and Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) modulation can be combined to create a wireless wonderland. That is pretty much just intituitive stuff huh? Ok, so I am a little lost (and disturbed) but if you want to know more see the link for explanations of everything.ADDENDUM by CooperFor those of you close to the Screaming-Penguin people, you know that my personal friend Jeff Ford is opening an Internet cafe here in Atlanta very soon. We are currently waiting for delivery of several 802.11 compliant devices. It is my own personal hope that all the IEEE speced equipment works as advertised, but here is what we are trying to make work: 1 iMac DV, 1 Mac G4, AirPort tranceiver (Apples 802.11 ethernet bridge), 1 Proxim RangeLAN802 PC Card, and 1 Proxim RangeLAN802 PCI card. Hopefully it will all talk to each other, but I will keep you informed.IEEE 802.11 Page
