OK, so I did buy the Jay and Silent Bob action figures long before DOGMA was released and am admittedly a huge Kevin Smith fan. SO what, a little bias builds character (or something like that.)Anyway, the latest ViewAskew production, DOGMA, was a great flick, another winner. Not quite as great in my humble opinion as some of the other View Askew productions (Chasimg Amy, Clerks) but still great. The movie is a theological conglomerate of true scripture and wacko creative license. All of it is hilarious. And whether or not you are very religious, or atheistic, or anywhere in between you may still appreciate this movie, it is not intended to offend anyone (although, it has, and it will because many people cant reflect and laugh at themselves.) The movie is packed with Christian religious references yet the story is easy to follow, and compelling, even if you know nothing about Christian "mythology",After all, if the 13th apostle, Rufus (Chris Rock), and the new prophets Jay and Bob dont make you realize this is a comedy then you are way too uptight in the first place. DOGMA is the story of fallen angels Loki and Bartelby who find a "loophole" and try to make their way back into heaven. However the catch is that this loophole will prove God is not infallible and thus destroy all existence. Rufus, the prophets, Bethany the last Zion (Linda Fiorentino), and Serendipity (Salma Hayek) team up with the Metatron or voice of God (Alan Rickman) and of course God herself (suprise, go see it) to stop them. The flick is full of the quick diatribe that is not only funny but intriguing and compelling, the Kevin Smith trademark. Overall the film is very good and definitely worth seeing (and if you havent, see Chasing Amy and Clerks, Mallrats is optional, sorry Bob.) The only thing I did not like was the disclaimer, that was lame (see the movie and you will understand, and Platylus enthusiasts be forewarned, you are also a target of the piercing Smith wit.) As for the point, well in my opinion, it was that all religion has become way too focused on the dogma, and therefore missed the real truths of spirituality. The importance (certianly in most religions, western especially) has been placed on the ritual, not on the reasoning. Organized religion has confounded and confused spirituality with rules and regulations, therefore diluting the truth and reality of the very doctrines they bear. Of course, I could be wrong, that is just my opinion, maybe the point was that "Mooby" is the one true God and that you idolators should repent to the Golden Cow. Check theology professor Elizabath Castellis views on the flick.ViewAskew
