Screaming Penguin - Source Does Matter

Rainbow Technologies has developed several "Crypto PCI Cards" that greatly "accelerate public key cryptographic functions." Most VPN products (some do have proprietary encryption accelerators) and all webservers (that I know of) perform software based cryprographic processing using the CPU. A plug in PCI card that can do that for you and offload the processor is a great concept.As more and more PKI cryptography is in use performance is becoming even more of a foremost concern. This is a potential answer to performance problems. Open source standard software (such as Free-S/WAN, for example) could be used to implement standard technologies such as an IPSEC based VPN and then an accelerator card could be used to enhance performance. Currently only expensive proprietary products with built in accelerators can offer that. If this card and this technology (and I have not used it, I have only read about it) can be applied to any standardized public cryptographics algorithms then propietary solutions are no longer the only game in town for accelerated cryptography.
