Why is the Penguin Screaming?: TechSightings Reviews ToTSP

First of all I have to say thanks to TechSightings for the review. Good, bad or ugly we appreciate the consideration (as long as it is fair and intelligible, as this review was.) Check out the link to read the ToTSP review and check out TechSightings in general, its a nice site. The reviewer says she doesnt normally review Linux sites because of the plethora and the Linux geek attitude. But she reviewed ToTSP because it was "different." I can understand the problem with overzealous "self-righteous" Linux geeks who "make a bad name for the rest of the Linux heads." And in my commentary and stories I do try to be fair. However, its true that many people are passionate about Linux because they are so frustrated with other commercial products, and at times those same people can get animated about what they believe in. I think the problem goes both ways, some people are also afraid of what they do not understand and are not willing to learn (I wont get into more here, before I am construed as a zealot myself, because this is an entirely different issue, but suffice to say I understand why this occurs on both sides, from firsthand experience.)That said, the "different" site is ToTSP. The reviewer asks and states in the title "why is the penguin screaming? Thats what I want to know." Well, Jules screams his chants at the temple because it is his method of worship, religious freedom for penguins should also be upheld! Jules screams because he is just that, in your face, direct, authoritative and often angry. Dont get him wrong, he is not a militant penguin, just a penguin with a cause and he thinks it is time the world heard about it (ToTSP, and Jules, were born over a year ago, while that may not sound like a long time, there were relatively few Linux sites then, and Jules came into the world screaming about Linux.) "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men...." 357 raised "...blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shephered the weak through the valley of darkness. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers." What can I say, Jules is complicated and obvisouly somewhat disturbed, and he screams at the temple, the temple of the screaming penguin. Always remember the courage Jules displayed in the face of severe adversity when he stood and proclaimed "reach into that bag and pull out my operating system, its the one that says BAD MOTHER%$%^ER on it!"Psuedo-scream-explanation aside, the reviewer seemed to like ToTSP although the claim "you could do worse than this website" isnt exactly a glowing endorsement. Well, it isnt a slam either. There is a glut of Linux sites, but ToTSP is one of the originators. This is not a big corporation trying to cash in, this is a truly community run open site founded by a few people (very few) who believed in Linux "back in the day" and who PAY to run it. The reviewer also points out that ToTSP "looks as though it needs an infusion of visitors." Man, that is right on, we need more support from the community. We actually have had a steady increase in visitors from day one, and have a healthy following to show for it, but we need more story authors (which anybody can be, just create an ID and go for it.) We are addressing some of these issues. Some of the problems are due to admittedly less than ideal user creation and story admin tools. These are being addressed and we are re-writing the entire infrastructure of ToTSP to improve all of the user tools and offer many more features. Our goal is to turn this into a world class Linux portal that also offers its own content. The new ToTSP will be ready very soon, please continue to support ToTSP and keep and eye out for the new stuff.   TechSightings ToTSP Review
