My next review is about the webs hottest embedded scripting language, PHP. The book, "Core PHP Programming" by Leon Atkinson, Prentice Hall PTR, 1999.
I must admit that I have been dissapointed by several Prentice Hall titles in the past (for example the "Linux Sys Admin Handbook" and others.) However, this book is actually quite good and it reclaims some respect for PTR-PH. As I stated, this is a good book. If you are interested in PHP from a detailed reference level, or just a beginner, this book does the job. The book begins by explaining what PHP is and its origins. It then continues through basic syntax and simple scripts. It continues in depth into all of the standard programming diction. It explains the data types, variables, constants, control statements, functions, etc. The book is well written and flows logically from the basics to the detailed. It also covers specific database functions for many database types and lesser known aspects of PHP such as classes.
Overall, a nice reference and a well written tutorial.
RATING - 4.7 Penguin Afros (out of a possible 5.2 on our scale.)
