atr0x:As if this even needs a review. The DNS bible if you will. O\'Reillys "DNS and BIND" by Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu (yeah, thats where you remember that name from), 1998.Well, it goes almost without saying, but this is a fantastic book and an indespensible resource for systems administrators. I recently did a project whereby I replaced all the NT DNS servers with RedHat BIND 8 boxes and thanks to this book it went flawless. The book covers BIND 4 and 8. It covers all the aspects of DNS as per the specs and covers the software implementations. It also has a reference on resolvers for many operating systems. Along with all of that information it contains resources on maintenance, security, debugging, dynamic DNS and more (dynamic DNS is sweet when configured with DHCP and reservations, forget about it.) THE DNS BOOK. Get it.A note on Linux vs. NT DNS. Use Linux. Dont get me wrong, I hear lots of people complain about NT DNS stating that it does not work correctly. I have never had that problem, it works fine and the GUI interface is great. However, when it comes to cost, performance and security. Linux kills NT. I also like being able to configure DNS ports, query AND response (for firewall issues, having DNS respond on 53 as well as answer is helpful, rather than the random high port.) This is easy on BIND, and as far as I can tell cant be done on NT (I could be wrong, there may be some obscure registry hack, but its not worth it.) Why pay for NT when a Linux distro can do the job better, for no cost? My main concern and reason for the switch was security, but all around Linux wins the DNS prize. Overall, a GREAT reference and a well written book. RATING - 5.29 Penguin Afros (out of a possible 5.2 on our scale.)Support TOTSP and get your copy here. DNS and BIND 3rd ed.
