The "dotcom" SuperBowl Ad Gamblers

SO did you guys watch the game and or the fancy "dotcom" ads? Last year there were 2 dotcoms advertising during the big bowl, this year there was a plethora. Last year monster.com made a big splash with cool adds that ran all year "I wanna be a yes man!." Monster was here again this year and so were a host of others. Unfortunately in my opinion most of this years advertisers were big losers. These ads generally sucked!Take lifeminders for example. What was that yellow crap with black text and no voice, all music. You tell me, what the heck does lifeminders even do? Then there was OurBeginning.Com, first off thats a stupid domain name, nobody who wants to send birth announcements online can spell beginnninning, whatever, where is my spell check (I cant even spell add?) They might as well have named it tommorrow.com. Second of all I only know WHAT they do because I went to the site to scope it out. Its a lame site with lame offerings. Online business cards and birth announcements? What!?! Then again there was MicroStrategy, I didnt get it. They spent huge bucks all over the place with multiple ads and I still cant figure out what they do. With all that stupidity, there had to be a bright spot or two, right?Well, I thought the shining stars were etrade and computer.com. Etrade was the best with crazy ads that actually led to a point, it may have been way out there with the other guys but it ended up somewhere. Computer.com also had somewhat funny ads that did make sense. I mean after all the hype the point is to get someone to rememeber what you do, where to find you and get them to think of you next time they need those services. Computer.com may have the best domain name and some good ad(d)s, but the hardware market is brutal and they will still need some luck to go with the saavy. These two companies accomplished the goal of the ads and outshone the rest of the lamer bunch. Now dont get me wrong, I am not writing this rant just to sound like Andy Rooney or to slam these companies, they may all be great companies. However, this was the big time, these guys spent 2.2 million and up per 30 seconds! If you have that kind of bank you better have an ad that is not only flashy and crazy, but an ad that tells people something, and a product to back it up. These companies will get press because of this one way or another, but without brand recognition and even a concept of what they do what good is that? I am being critical, but think about it, if someone is spending 2 million bucks for a TV add you would think the site would ROCK. Hey did you see that, what do they do ads, along with lame sites, just wont cut it? Somebody give me 2 million bucks, I will show you a website. What about it, an add with an afro stylin penguin, toting a 357 and quoting scripture? The penguin says "you know what they call a quarter pounder in france?" . . ."check out the brains on this motherf$##er". Then the screen fades to black and the famous URL 'www.screaming-penguin.com' appears. Ok, so I missed the point too, but I could throw away 2 million bucks in style!
