There are stories everywhere about this, and for the record, there is not an apparent official word yet, but 'reportedly' the Bush administration and US government is preparing a plan to use nucular (as prez calls them) weapons against several countries.
Emphasis, this is still in the reported stage, the reality of the situation may simply be that the administration has said something like 'make sure the nuclear program is ready in case we ever need it' or similar and it has been spun into this. Or, it may be accurate?
If this IS accurate, it is a questionable policy. Blowing up the world, or parts, may NOT be the way to win a purported 'war on terrorism' (depending on the goals of said war.) I say purported because even the conflict in Afghanistan is of a questionable nature (IMHO.) I dont fault the President for taking action, he has handled himself quite well during the crises (and he certainly is not the person that facilitated the conflict) and I greatly admire the troops in the field doing a very noble and dangerous job. What I mean is, rationally thinking, what is the goal?
Officials have repeatedly said 'its to kill them or arrest them.' Ok, whom exactly is them? If them is any terrorist organization and our goal is to lessen the potential or realized chances of further terrorist attacks occurring in the US then attacking other nations and or terrorist groups, even those that 'harbor terrorists', even in Afghanistan, may NOT be the way to go.
I dont for a second claim that I have the answers. Certainly the federal authorities involved and the President have greater wisdom and more information than I or any other speculative person have.
However, what if we kill every Al Queda member? What if we kill every Hamas member? What if . . . etc etc. Does anyone rightfully think that will stop or even slow down terrorism? The wars and attacks may create MORE fervor and more appetite for terrorism, more anti American sentiment, etc. The dead terrorists certainly wont kill or cause any more terror, but what about the 10,000 believers in that terrorist that are left behind? We may be making great martyrs, but not necessarilly stopping terrorism? The root cause must be dealt with. Why is America and the rest of the western world so hated? What makes people give up their lives and kill other people in the name of god? Is it money, is it land, is it respect, whatever, it needs more global understanding.
There is no easy answer here but maybe we should at least be contemplating and addressing other means. Such as education, assistance, figuring out the root of problems and genuinely trying to help. Al Queda are not born terrorists. They dont come into the world hating America and yielding bombs. There are reasons and root causes that terrorism occurs. Sometimes the reasons are totally irrational, yes, but if they are dealt with by some type of dialogue and education maybe more lives can be saved, on both sides, than by waging a war from EITHER side.
Many of the causes of terrorism and incredibly complex and maybe not even understood. The problems are not even ours, they dont relate to us. Any campaign to find out more about root causes and help in any way would be tremendously expensive, but what amount of time and energy and resources do we think it will require to fight a global war forever?
In the end, military might and wiping out the hardline terrorists may be the correct action. I am not stating that the current action is wrong. And again, I am not stating that I know the answer to this complicated question I am just stating that I think other possible options should be at LEAST thoroughly explored. The offense defense may work for the short term, but what about the long term world that is left behind?

Re: The US ready to roll out the nukes?
This is simply another example of the Bush administrations backhanded and misleading policies about nuclear weapons. Lets take strategic arms reduction -- one of W's campain promises. I think the handlers got him to say "strategic arms" because they knew he couldnt say nuclear.
Anyway, his big plan to reduce the nukes? WELL, first we arent going to disassemble any nukes, we are going to take them out of the silos and warehouse them. Next we are going to build new, fancier nukes to replace many of them. The end result? a 45% INCREASE in the number of weapons in the nuclear stockpile, but a decrease in the weapons on hot-standby. How do we recoup a peace dividend from the end of the cold war this way? We don't.
Re: The US ready to roll out the nukes?
Just wanted to throw in a couple of more comments/thoughts on this.
1) Terrorism is pretty much a 'new' name for a practice that has been going on as long as there have been one group of people in power and another, (smaller,) group of people unhappy with that arrangement. This is not something new, and it is not something that the US has created with its foreign policy. I have heard this argument many times and I have the simple, uneloquent response of "horseshit." It has been around forever. From pre-Mohommed (sp?) clans attacking camel-trains in the middle-east to roving bands of 'knights' attacking tax-wagons.
2) Along these same lines: The US foreign policy has long been in favor of the very religions of the terrorists that claim the most damage from the US. The last major conflicts have all been to defend a Muslim group of people from harm and/or complete annihilation. The biggest problem with US policy (as me in my armchair sees it) is the lack of execution. We make noises about stuff, and every once in a while, we step in and make a mess of things. Not ever achieving our 'purpose' (which is usually worthwhile and good.) Not ever just leaving it alone. Desert Storm: Massed incredible amounts of manpower and weaponry and then stopped before finishing the task of removing Saddam. Somalia: flit around and sometimes do good, sometimes do nothing. Lose men because we don't want to 'escalate', then bail and leave the situation worse than it was. East Europe: ditto. The list goes on and goes back. As a populace, Americans have lost their taste for war, so as soon as it gets ugly, the politicians pull back for fear of losing their votes. This makes America an excellent target for patient people. Make a hit. Ride out the ensuing vengeance, for people will soon return to the mall. Then strike again. Wait. Rinse. Repeat. One huge challenge that W is facing is figuring out how to get enough done to forestall the next attack *before* the populace decides that 'education' is the answer and force is unnecessary. This will be the biggest challenge, I believe.
3)Some people *are* born to hate America/Jews/Blacks/Muslims/Catholics/etc. Or more to the point, they are brought up to hate. This is something that is instilled into them from literally the time that they can listen and understand and talk. Parents create this culture. Think about it, for at least 5-6 years of your creation, the ONLY form of education is what you see and hear around you. If for that time you hear nothing but hate, fear, or anger towards a group/color/religion then I claim that no education in the world can make you not believe that. Even if you don't know whatever slang word is used by your parents means, in a few years you will, and then you'll start using it. It is simply what you know.
I know several people that you would think were decent folks. They don't look or act like hateful people. However, get these people around their families and bring up whatever it is that they are discriminating against, and I bet that you will see a frightful side of them. I have seen it over and over again. It takes a strong willed person to overcome the 'teachings' of their family. And if it does come to happen, then I can also say that I believe that it comes from within the person and not external education.
Just a point: the people that executed the attacks of 9/11. By accounts that I have heard, they lived in the US for quite some time before carrying out their missions. Maybe I am naive, but to me, that in and of itself should have been an amazing education. It is very easy to see that (all) Americans are not devils. The problem is that you have to want to learn, and people conditioned from their birth not to learn simply won't.
Re: The US ready to roll out the nukes?
hey man, totally well put, every word. i am not saying bush created terrorism, i even think he has done a good job of handling things (the article was not meant to be anti bush at all, well, except for that 'nucular' crack, sorry.)
i agree with what you say, some people are BROUGHT UP to hate but they are not BORN with it. all i am saying is why are they brought up that way? not an easy question i know, but is waging war the answer? maybe it is, im not saying it aint, maybe it is the most effective means in an incredible difficult situation and time, but also, shouldnt we consider that maybe it isnt?
you are also right about this kind of stuff being ancient. fighting of people of different beliefs and families and ethnicities is older than civilization, maybe its built in, but it just seems to me that in all our modern brilliance and wonder, with all our resources in this day and age there may be a more enlightened way.
that goes for all of us, not just the current administration of the us, but every person. nobody is winning this game, not the terrorists, not us, etc.
if people "wont" learn, which i concede is true in many cases, then what do we do? if we kill them does that make the people around them want to learn more or less?
again man, im not saying we are wrong for what we do, im just not sure we its right, or its the only approach.
