Linux and Wordperfect Gain on Microsoft and Office
Take a look at this The Register Wordperfect Story. Wordperfect has in the past had niche markets, and some mainstream market share, but now is apparently seriously gaining on MSOffice as of late. The article also elaborates on the fact that a free version of Wordperfect for Linux is fueling the fire. Linux itself has also made serious inroads into the PC server marketshare, SERIOUS. AND I feel that although the Linux desktop is still mainly limited to adventerous users and or techno geeks, that will change very soon. Linux with a GUI desktop is very close to being ready to take on Windows. Be it KDE or GNOME or whomever, the time is near when functionality, application availability, reliability, performance and feasability of the Linux GUI desktop will not only rival Windows, but far outperform and outpace it. Admittedly this is not currently the case. If you are technical enought to make Linux do what you need it outperforms, but its not ready for every user, yet (not idiot proof.) Microsoft market share is in jeopardy from all sides, the new millenium and new markets should be very interesting. And as we say at The temple of The Screaming-Penguin (well we ripped it off, but its cool): May the Source be With You.
