Wow,the SNNS is now available for download from the University of Stuttgart. In todays exciting computing environment, thanks to projects like this, more and more "everyday" users are exposed to incredible computing projects like Beowulf and SNNS. SNNS or the Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator allows everyday users to learn about and experiment with adaptive systems, neural networks.According to the developers the SNNS is:SNNS (Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator) is a software simulator for neural networks on Unix workstations developed at the Institute for Parallel and Distributed High Performance Systems (IPVR) at the University of Stuttgart. The goal of the SNNS project is to create an efficient and flexible simulation environment for research on and application of neural nets.SNNS comes with several sample networks and or allows you (with a knowledge of multi-variable calculus) to create your own network projects. It is truly a tool for prototyping and experimenting, but even so, it is quite amazing and quite a learning experience for a novice to neural networks. Traditional neural networks do not use algorithmic methods like standard computers do. Neural networks are required for applications in which unambiguous definitions and procedures (such as those used by conventional programs) are impractical or unsuitable. The design of a neural network is "loosely modeled after the network of neurons and synapses found in the human brain and other biologicval systems." A neural network deals with connection oriented information processing "carried out by interconnected networks of primitive computational cells." Typical applications include image and sound recognition. A neural network provides an alternative to algorithmic methods. Screenshot:
Very interesting and intriguing stuff, for more info check out the SNNS site or the July 99 issue of Linux Journal. Thanks must go to Linux Journal for an excellent article by Ed Petron in the July 99 issue about SNNS that brought it to the forefront of our attention. (Also, the above quotes are directly from the article.)
