New Heavy Ion Collider Could Destroy Earth?

Check out this Ion Collider Story in the London Times. I read about this in a local newspaper also, a little disconcerting. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)on Long Island in New York state could not only help us to understand physics and atomic particles, but could implode our planet. You read that right, continue. There is a "tiny but very real" possibility that this machine could produce "stranglets." Strangelets are "a new type of matter made up of sub-atomic particles called "strange quarks." The possibility is that once formed Strangelets might start a chain reaction and convert anything they touched into more strange matter. The collinding particles could even achieve such a high density that the creation on a "mini black-hole" could result. This mini black-hole then could suck in all surrounding matter with an intense gravitational field, suck in the earth! This is all speculation and the possibilites are very minute. However, the fact that a team of international physicists calls the possibility of such an occurrence "tiny", rather than impossible warrants concern, or at least a closer look.
