This is an excellent tutorial on Java servelets and using Apache Jserv. Java servelets and JSP are the optimal way to run server side and embedded scripts. Yes, there are alternatives and there is debate, but arguably nothing else is as portable (and valuable to know) as java. Check the link for the tutorial.
