Holy storage capacity batman, do you have another one of those "Deskstar 75GXP" drives on your belt, we are running out of drive space!
SAN JOSE , California. March 15, 2000 -- IBM today announced two new products that set world records for data storage -- the highest capacity hard
drive and the greatest areal density of any hard disk drive product.
The quick techno review is that these Deskstar drives rock! The Deskstar 75GXP is a 7200 RPM drive with internal transfer rates of 444 Mb/sec and average seek times of 8.5 ms to enable a sustained data transfer rate of up to 37 MB/sec. Capacities range from 75 to 15 GB. The Deskstar 40GV is a 5400 RPM drive, and an average seek time of 9.5 ms in capacities of 40 to 20 GB. Both of these products will reportedly transfer data at up to 100MB/sec with an ATA interface (yeah, you read that right, 75GB and faster than SCSI-3 UltraWide.)
Check out the links for further details on these new IBM hard drives (and thanks to Slashdot for the post on it.) Also note that IBM is a leader in storage density with a golf ball sized terrabyte drive supposedly in the works, and they are doing great research in the holographic storage arena. Applaud IBM.
