Book Review: Demon Haunted World (Carl Sagan)

Demon Haunted World

The "Demon Haunted World" is a truly amazing book. It is amazing on many different levels. The endeavour of the scientific method and of skeptical thinking are laid out to form a basis for reality, truth, knowledge and spirituality which are all interwoven in our lives. This book was written by a great man trying with a brilliant mind to convey that we should all think for ourselves and question everything. I could not agree more, skepticism and correct analysis of thought and experiment are essential to truth.

The book goes on to give the reader a glimpse into the personal life and motivation of one of the worlds truly most magnificent people ever, the author (whom was instrumental in many things, among which the were the policies for nuclear disarmament and a strong voice of reason during the "strike first" and "strike back" policy making sessions during the "cold" war, not to mention his contributions to the human understanding of the universe).

The book also provides great insight on why skeptical thinking and science are of paramount importance for the future. It covers many pseudo-science areas and treats all fairly but very critically, such as the scientific method demands. From aliens, religion, crystals, divining and ghosts, all that and more are touched upon and all are held up to the scrutiny of critical thinking. Through this exercise many basic fallacies and or distortions are dissected carefully with the "baloney detection kit."

This book is an achievement and truly is a "candle in the dark." Our society and our world could use a serious dose or reality and reality is more beneficial by far than fear or ignorance. The book is not a simple debunking of things that are not scientifically proven, it is a historical and critical work that teaches us how to think and why and urges us to do so for ourselves. This book also goes further than many science books in that it delves into ethics and social responsibilities for use and conveyance of science and knowledge.

This is an all around must read and again it is fair on all levels (please do not be afraid of this book for religious reasons, it is very open minded and fair concerning religion). (* The previous blurb is meant to convey that the book is very think for yourself oriented and does not judge, this is not a personal religious statement, this is not the place for a religious debate and the book neither condones nor condemns religion, I take the same stance.)

Overall - FANTASTIC - 10.0 Penguin Afros out of a possible 5.2 on our scale (off the charts!)
