Last friday a federal judge ruled that journalist Eric Corley cannot post the DeCSS program on his website (which happens to be 2600, hmmmm.)
Since the ruling there has been tremendous interest and press coverage. NPR did a very informative story (check the real audio link.)
DeCSS is (well, was originally) the Linux intended program that allows the cracking of CSS (the Content Scrambling System, this is the encryption used on DVD) and the subsequent viewing of DVD. Yeah, there is potential for copying DVD once the encryption is broken, but the original intent was playback (supposedly.)
Since the ruling downloads and interest in DeCSS have soared. Check it out and get your copy on the DeCSS central website.
Whichever side you are on, its an interesting debate and a volatile issue. This is an extension of the copyright law and MP3 debate. Check out more resources via the links. Internet Copyright Law: NPR
