The WWF.com debacle: wrestling or wildlife?

So what does WWF stand for and who is allowed to use it? Well, I guess that depends on your perspective. Lawyers for the World Wrestling Federation have called the claims by the World Wildlife Fund that a trademark "agreement" has been broken by the former ridiculous. Quote: "Nobody goes to wwf.com to see pandas."

Apparently the actual trademark belongs to the World Wildlife Fund and their WWF organization is older than the World Wrestling Federation. The details of the "agreement" are sketchy, but also apparently the Wildlife WWF agreed to allow the Wrestling WWF to use the initials WWF in some capacity but specifically did not want them used for a domain name. Well, the Wrestling WWF is using the domain name wwf.com and calls the claims by the Wildlife WWF preposterous.

Agreement details are lacking. The fact of the matter is that if the Wildlife WWF owns the trademark they should simply pull the plug entirely on the wrestling WWF if they do not cooperate. I wont editorialize on which one is a better organization (Ok, well a little, I belong and have contributed money to one of the organizations, and its not the one that is a ridiculously moronic charade that pretends to be a sport) but either way they are strange bedfellows and the entire issue is a strange arrangement.

More news on this matter will surely follow as details are made more clear and available. For now, go to wwf.org to see pandas, and for the record, some people DO actually care about pandas, even those people may be in the minority!   http://www.wwf.org
