The Oreilly Network has a nice mini tutorial and explanatory story about the computer booting process that is an excerpt from Understanding The Linux Kernel. From the BIOS to the kernel execution, the entire bootsrap is outlined. This will be old hat to many, but is still very important information to have and understand.
