Oracle 9i, cheaper because it clusters???

Oracles big new product release attacks IBM and Microsoft for their lack of features. IBM and Microsoft attack Oracle because of its expense. The shrewd new plan at Oracle seems to be to put the expense blame on the hardware and not the software. One of the highly touted new features of the new 9i is that it has cluster capability built in and can run on many smaller servers rather than the one big honkin machine.

Its shrewd, but its hype. Its Oracle that is too much money. So are DB2 and Informix though, and SQL Server is not even a player when you are talking about real databases (I am not talking about your kid sisters phone list, I mean real enterprise data with real security.) The real threat to all the big guys here is open source. MySQL and PostGRES are fantastic and have a plethora of features. PostGRES is robust and enterprise capable and MySQL is light and fast for smaller projects.

Oracle is a great product, dont get me wrong, but the expense just cant be justified by reality. Check into the stable, fast, and free alternatives   Oracle 9i, cheaper because it clusters???: wired
