A year or so ago there was much hype about the new 64 bit Itanium chips (and the "sledgehammer" AMD flavors?) Lately it has calmed down but as the technology actually approaches nearer to production stages focus shifts to operating systems and apps that are suitable. There is already a Linux Itanium flavor (and there has been for some time) and Microsoft says it will be ready in October. The bottom line is that Linux is leading the 64bit way and is even shipping with many of the development machines. For more info on Itanium and Linux check the linked VNUnet article (and see the other links for Itanium and Sledgehammer info.) Linux first off Itanium block: VNUNet
