PBS has a story by Robert X. Cringley on using "dry pairs" (copper wo dial tone) to create your own DSL circuits and campus type networks, dirt cheap! This is a great article full of truly great info, the phone companies will hate it.
Basically using existing or ultra cheap to setup dry pairs (such as alarm lines, etc) you can create a nifty 2MB network between all locations where the wiring is available (or can be installed) and you can then connect one part of that network to an existing Internet connection (yeah, no free lunch of course, you still have to have at least some type of real connection to the net somewhere.)
Cringley goes on to suggest several ways you could extend this simple idea and become your own ISP and or broadband "tycoon."
Good stuff, checkit via the link. Roll Your Own DSL: PBS
