JavaReport has a good article that outlines the latest JSP specs. The JSP 1.2 API is part of the larger Servlet 2.3 API and both have undergone some significant changes while maintaining backwards compatability.

For example the JSP XML syntax is now fully supported which means better flexibility for authoring tools (and for your own parsing requirements, more important than "authoring tools" anyway, since emacs works just fine for JSP;).)
