Yeah, its the same old story. No real business model, couldnt keep the financing going. Former surgeon general C. Everett Koop helped found DrKoop.com in 1998, it will "cease operations" very soon.
DrKoop was in my opinion a great concept. The idea of making medical information available on the web is viable (and there are a plethora of sites out there doing the same thing.) However, the problem lies in how to make money doing that. There is no money in advertising, as DrKoop found out, and its very tough to establish a sales base late in the game.
Medical Info is great, but in order to be successful at running a huge company based off of that there has to be a revenue source, DrKoop never found it (several other models that center around medical information approach it differently and hopefully they will survive and make money.)
