Microsoft sues "Lindows": C|net

Tagged:
Microsoft is suing a small start up company named "Lindows" that is planning on releasing a Linux distro complete with Wine and windows apps. We all know that Microsoft is worried about Linux, but this is ridiculous. I know it sounds like slam Microsoft day around here, but I subscribe to the edict, "credit where due", and lately they are doing more and more to earn the criticism. Lindows is a threat to Microsoft? Consumers will confuse Lindows with Windows? This stuff comes from a company that has trademarks on "Windows", "Office" and "Internet Explorer." Why does Microsoft have such a public relations problem again? For more info see the linked Cnet story and checkout Lindows, could be cool!   Microsoft sues "Lindows": C

Re: Microsoft sues

It's obviously a copyright violation. I'm no fan of Microsoft, but it's obvious that the creators of Lindows software are trying to tag along with Microsofts popular trademark. I think McDonalds might have concerns if an upstart company named their place McDanolds and threw up a yellow arch to advertise the place. Same deal. If this "Lindows" is worth a bag of rocks, they should prove it by offering a superior product... not with cheap marketing gimmicks... Which is what this amounts to.

Re: Microsoft sues

Huh? A clever little play on words, which most certainly will NOT cause any confusion to anyone smart enough to be able to purchase software at all, is hardly justification for yet another Microsoft attempt to control everything. Is Microsoft so vulnerable that it feels the need for legal protection of the name "Windows"? Hell, I've got windows in every wall of my house. Hope Microsoft don't find out, because I just might be confusing the software buying public and deprive Willy of a few bucks. Despite all that, I'm quite sure that with all the crooked officials Little Willy has in his pockets Microsoft will get away with this, just as they got away with just about everything else they've done so far.

Re: Microsoft sues

I don't think this is a case of Little Willy having officials in his pocket. Gotta go with MS on this one. Lindows definitely seems to be a textbook copyright violation. There is no purpose except to play on the expectations and existing ideas of the consumers.
