The specific area (chapter?) in the excerpt is "The Bottleneck." It is about the resources of the Earth, consumption, usage, population control and the entire equation of humanity and earth. Again, its worth a read, its very provocative (either way.)

For every person in the world to reach present U.S. levels of consumption with existing technology would require four more planet Earths.
