Uh, yeah, why not get Alpha Centauri, Mount Olympus and the Golden Gate while you are at it? Personally I think this is a load of bunk, but apparently many people are selling property on the moon and other planets! Not only that, but some clowns are BUYING!
For the people that dreamed this up, hoorah to you. If you can get somebody to give you money for some acreage on the moon and then draw them up a little deed, then good for you. For the people that buy this crap, get a clue.
TechTV recently had a show about this and that is what piqued my curiosity. Apparently, according to the show, the International Space Treaty of 1967 bans explicitly bans the ownership of extraterrestrial bodies, but it does not spell out that this ban also pertains to individuals. That oversight has led some folks to stake claims to the moon and other celestial bodies (more than one \"folks\" per celestial body in many cases.)
Dennis Hope over at the \"Lunar Embassy\" apparently staked his claim to the moon some years ago and he is considered to be the main lunatic (pun intended.) Dennis says that he owns the moon, and he is selling \"extraterrestrial real estate.\" On the show he claimed that he will have 40 million people signed up in the next 10 years and then he used that as an argument to say its all legit (supporting his claim with another of his own claims, if this many people are in then it must be legal.) On the Lunar Embassy site Dennis claims that \"250 celebrities and 2 former presidents\" own a piece of the moon through him (yeah, ok, so Shirley MacLaine bought 230, and Boys to Men bought some, and of course Reagan and Bush senior HAD to get in on it.\"
A \"space\" lawyer on the program said, nope, sorry, countries AND their citizens are forbidden from \"ownership\" of extraterrestrial bodies. He pointed out that even in the days of countries staking claims to areas on the Earth, the claims were often disputed and were always held up ONLY based on possession. To that Dennis said \"40 million people!\" I dont blame the guy for trying, and honestly, he is probably filthy rich because of this venture, but it is still ridiculous.
