CodeCon 2002 just ended in San Francisco and many new projects and ideas were revealed.
Many other news sites are playing the "unemployed hacker" angle and stating that the econ downturn is greatly helping open source software. Then it gets spinned into all the unempployed hackers are at CodeCon. I disagree with that take, these people (myself included) help with open source anyway, but either way, there is some neat stuff going on at CodeCon.
The "hot" projects appear to be peer to peer related. Check it all out via the linked CodeCon website. http://codecon.org/
