RIAA Sales Down Because They Stopped Napster?

Slashdot has a very interesting story about the RIAA and Napster debacle. The RIAA had two banner years starting in 1999. This was the height of Napster. Then after Napster had been stopped by RIAA legal action, the RIAA sales are down!

It appears from several studies that RIAA sales 'mirror Napster downloads.' Load gun, shoot foot.

One study commissioned by the RIAA (always gotta love studies about an entity that are paid for BY same said entity) finds that ' 23 percent of surveyed music consumers say they are not buying more music because they are downloading or copying their music for free.' The RIAA uses this as a trumpet that they were right all along.

The slashdot author aptly points out that this may mean that 77% ARE buying more BECAUSE they are downloading it? Their own study might prove that Napster simply increases interest in their products, and that people still BUY music.
