Robert Ballard finds the Kennedy PT-109 off the Solomons. When Ballard sets out to find a boat, he finds it.
He is a remarkable person. Ballard was on Scientific American Frontiers last night discussing several finds with host Alan Alda (Titanic, Lusitania, Yorktown, Bismarck, on and on with smaller ships). Ballard has basically single handedly reshaped underwater archeology. Several of his insights have led to great developments in ROVs (remote operated vehicles) and manned submersibles.
Ballard also has founded several science and exploration organizations and concepts. Yes, concepts. His \"telepresence\" aims to put remotely controlled cameras on wires at various ocean locations, leave them there, and let students around the world control them.
Ballard founded the JASON project in 1989. \"The JASON Project is a non-profit educational organization working in partnership with teachers, students, corporations, educational institutions and government to inspire in students a lifelong passion to pursue learning in science, math and technology through exploration and discovery.\"
