"United Linux" on the way: VNUnet

Linux players Caldera, SuSE, TurboLinux and Connectiva will be joined by IBM, HP, Intel and others in a new Linux front, United Linux.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Many analysts are hyping this as "the future of Linux depends on it" and "what Linux has always needed." I wouldnt go that far. Having different distros is NOT a big deal. I have used many of them (Redhat, Slackware, SuSE, Debian) and its really not hard to switch between them as they stand. Also, apps run on all of them, again, not a big deal. Sure you have to make sure some libraries, etc, are in place, but its all the same kernel, etc. Not granted, rpms are different from other package management utils, but COMPILE IT, IT WILL RUN. I think the new United Linux is a good thing, and shrewd move by said companies, but certainly not what the future of Linux depends on.
