devShed has a nice intro article to using Apache as a proxy. Apache can do many more things than serve up static web content. Apaches proxy features are GREAT. It can proxy forward (standard) for users inside a network, with caching features, etc, AND it is a fantastic reverse proxy that supports HTTP 1.1 (which many proxies have problems with).
With on IP address and an Apache reverse proxy machine, you can host as many internal web servers with their own machines and own internal addresses as you want, its very cool. There is always of course virtual hosting, etc, but if you really want a separate 2U rack mount machine for each web and app server, etc, it can be done with ONE outside IP and an Apache reverse proxy.
For more info on Apache as a proxy in general check the linked devShed article. Using Apache As A Proxy Server: devShed
