Netcraft June Survey Released: Apache surge, IIS dip

Tagged:
Netcrafts June survey points out a few very important and very interesting things. First of all the raw numbers show that Apache gained 3.46 percent and IIS dropped 2.72 percent. Apache runs 59.67 percent of webserves. Not huge changes by any means, but small surge for Apache and dip for IIS. The last month has been a trying one for BOTH IIS and Apache. Both had serious remote exploits. Problems are common for some webservers, even serious ones are routine for IIS, but a serious Apache problem is very rare (personally I can only recall a few, 2-4, remote superuser exploits in the 5-6 years I have used Apache, IIS can commonly reach that number in a week). That being said it was a tough month all around on webservers. Actually the most trying time is now, all exploits are "in the wild." Netcraft does point out that worms such as Code Red, and for that matter serious exploits in general, HELP THE OVERALL INTERNET. Sure they make for a tough week or two, but all in all more companies, individuals and admins are forced to pay attention and upgrade or replace software and that leads to a healthier landscape in the long term. Netcraft states that before Code Red many IIS sites were secretly taken over and used by unathorized sources and that Code Red itself forced many to clean up. This is an illustration of how open and upfront security is a BETTER solution than covert and obscure means. Again, its an interesting survey, checkit via the link. ---->>>>>   http://www.netcraft.com/survey/
