Screaming Penguin - Source Does Matter

Check the linked CNN story. If it is accurate it is very troubling. At least I think its troubling, does anyone else have issues with the US plan to attack Iraq? (And the US does have such a plan, the one in the article is played off as just a contingency, but make no mistake the current US administration has made it very clear that they plan to oust Saddam, somehow.)

I give the US administration its right of way on this one. I must be ignorant and must not have information that they have that is pushing this course. Why should we attack Iraq? It makes no sense for the US to invade, anywhere.

There must be some dire threat that the government is not telling us about. Thats a problem too, I think. I feel that if such a dire situation exists that the government feels an invasion and military force are required then the people have a right to know BEFOREHAND why.

I know we have Iraq issues in the past. I know Iraq invaded Kuwait and we jumped in to help in the "Gulf War." So what, that is all over. Yeah Saddam is still in power, but he is still within the borders of his own country also. If this were a UN mandate or there was more proof of something else going on then fine, but its not. The UN totally opposes these plans.

The hinting that the US administration has done is that Saddam now possesses weapons of mass destruction! Not only that but he may use them! Even so I dont think these are reason enough to invade anywhere. Many nations "possess" nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass desctuction (and one nation has USED them on others before). As they stated on the fantastic news program "the Daily Show", "who do they think they are, us!?"

Now dont get me wrong. Saddam has a history of being irresponsible and killing people. I am cognicent of that. So if there really IS a serious threat of weapons of mass destruction in the hands of such a person then the US government and the world has a responsibility to act and yes that action must be PRE-EMPTIVE (I agree with the US administration position that in this day and age we cannot wait to react.)

So if this great threat DOES exist then we need to make a case to oust Saddam IN PLAIN SIGHT. This case needs to go to the UN and ALL PARTICIPATING NATIONS need to agree that the threat is real and adverse enough to warrant action. This WOULD NOT be an easy case to make. But it damn well should not be. If there is to be an INVASION by MILITARY FORCE of a SOVEREIGN NATION then there better be serious evidence and a clear case of why that action is taking place.

We invaded Iraq before with a clear reason. We were protecting Kuwait (which really meant our oil interests in the region) and that was plain to see. An invasion now for some esoteric governmental reason would be a mistake.
