Instant messaging is a very important app. It is used for communication and collaboration among many entities, its not just for chatting with Grandma anymore. That said it is also a very strange landscape mired by proprietary standards. Along comes jabber. Jabber is an open source XML based instant messaging platform, protocol and application. Jabber has servers and clients and can currently communicate with most proprietary systems (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.) Jabber is a great example of open source initiative that is forcing an entire segment of the industry to re-evaluate the proprietary model of instant messaging. The Jabber movement is important, for more info as to why check the linked NewsForge article. Why is Jabbers open standard important for instant messaging? : newsForge
