This one made me laugh out loud. Many of us are aware how insecurely some networks are setup, and many of are also aware about insecure wireless networks. Scanners and other products are easily setup and wireless networks are often left totally unsecured. Well, the spammers have taken notice of this gem.
It appears a new tactic is "drive by" spam. Spammers will drive up to a building, scan it, then find a wireless network or seven and log in. (I have seen people do this, its NOT hard, its not crazy techno, its trivial.) Then the spammers will commence the spam, using the networks email servers and sending to recipients ON the network. Then the spammers simply drive away, deed done. Of course the company that provided the network all of the sudden has more teenage whores ready to go, viagra, HGH, printer toners and mortgages than they can handle and figures out something is up.
Now I dont like spam, hate it in fact, but in this case I had to laugh because the spammers are providing a SERVICE. They are demonstrating the network security flaws to the companies they crack.
Funny stuff. Still illegal, still not the RIGHT thing to do, but funny. Checkit via the link. Drive-by spam hits wireless LANs: news.com
