Lotus creator making open source Outlook alternative: ZDNet
Mitch Kapor is credited with designing the first commercially successfully spreadsheet program, Lotus 1-2-3. He was also co founder of Lotus Development.
Mitch now has a new project, the Open Source Application Foundation that is currently working an open source alternative to "Outlook" as the linked ZDNet UK article states (I think they mean alternative to Exchange, the actual site of the project clearly intends messaging, calendaring, appointments, etc, but the article does say Outlook).
The project is very ambitious but also very much relevant and needed. The software will incorporate Jabber (ultra cool) and is planned to have virtually all the capabilities of the Exchange/Outlook combo without all the headaches (security, licensing, cost, etc).
