Apple has released a version of Darwin (the BSD based guts of OS X) for x86. The x86 version has limited hardware support and cant run in emulators but still might be fun to mess with. For more check the links.   Apple releases Darwin for x86: theAge

Re: Apple releases Darwin for x86

I wonder if anyone is working on porting the carbon/cocoa APIs to X. That would be a neat project...OS X without all that pesky apple hardware.

Re: Apple releases Darwin for x86

yeah thats kinda what i was thinking, kinda. i dont know how all apple the layers work, but i was thinking along the lines of if darwin works maybe the next layers (the cocoa PDF thingamagig) will work too and you could totally OSX it without an apple!

Re: Apple releases Darwin for x86

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. Thing, though that is looking better and better is the crossover APIs for OSX though. Qt, XUL and the OpenOffice APIs are now runnable in both Darwin/X and OSX/Quartz. With the Cocoa APIs being all Java anyway, its very likely that down the road you will see a Darwin/X for x86 that will run the software you want to run from OSX, but won't look as good. I will still vouce for OSX being at the top of my list now for *nixes. With the 10.2 release they have give people more options to control the machines with more standard *nix stuff overriding the NeXTy NetConfig database. It really is great to have a BSD that you can install Warcraft 3 and Tony Hawk 4 on the day they ship. Though it is getting a little old now, I do love my iBook.
