A study by IDC reportedly states that Windows 2000 is cheaper to run over a five year period than Linux. The story is posted on PCWorld but there are no links to the "study" or any substantive information.
Also the article notes that "Aberdeen Group reported in November that the open-source operating system collectively had incurred more high-risk security advisories than Windows since the beginning of 2002".
All of this sounds like great information to base decisions off of as IT managers move forward on projects. Wait, . . . , this just in, monkeys are flying out of my ass.
These "studies" only prove how geniune and valuable studies in fact are. Whom funded this research? Whom reviewed and edited the results? Where are the actual results? Etc, etc, etc.
Windows is cheaper and more secure than Linux/open-source? While anything is possible, I highly doubt that the playing field was level when Windows was declared to be less expensive and more secure than Linux.
If all things were equal and a real unbiased result shows Windows has a better TCO and is more secure than props to Windows. However, based on personal experience with BOTH operating systems in corporate environments for 10 years or so, I would personally state the studies are a load of crap. The chances that things were equal and a real and unbiased result was obtained are the same as the flying monkeys.
For more on this fine study see the linked PCWorld article.
UPDATE
Turns out this was a MICROSOFT FUNDED "study". Hmmmm. See this silicon.com story for more.
