Self proclaimed "market researcher" META group proclaims that Microsoft will offer Linux products for server stuff by 2004. Well while I agree that may be one way to solve the atrocious security issues that MS has, I personally dont think its in the realm of possibility.
Dont get me wrong, I think it might be a wise move for Microsoft if they were to stop and really consider it. However, even so, after all the battles and the bashing, would Microsoft really be able to sell Linux with a straight face? (Not that a straight face has ever been a Microsoft priority.)
I just dont see this one happening, no matter how much market share and prominence Linux gains even in spite of underhanded MS efforts. For more on the speculation see the linked ZDNet article. Microsoft expected to offer Linux software: ZDNet

Re: Microsoft Linux available in 2004
I think that they mean that Microsoft will be selling software that runs on Linux, as opposed to selling Linux. I don't see this as a big problem or outside the realm of possibility.
Re: Microsoft Linux available in 2004
I saw several stories on this and they went both directions. Some said there may be an MS Linux and some have stated apps to be ported to Linux. I dont see Microsoft officially doing EITHER, ever.
Re: Microsoft Linux available in 2004
Then you underestimate the power of a buck. Let's just say that the /.ers dream of the Linux Desktop coming to fruition. The masses rejoice because they now have a wonderfully usable, stable, application-rich desktop.
Do you think for two seconds that MS isn't going to cash in on that? Especially given the progress of mono (or .gnu) in porting the .NET architecture to Linux.
Just as a small case in point here
Re: Microsoft Linux available in 2004
I tend to agree with this. As soon as Linux reaches a certain stage in the desktop market and assuming (big assumption here) that other companies are actually able to profit by producing software running on Linux then you will see Microsoft products on that platform. Office, .Net you name it. The biggest barrier I see now is Linux seems almost the equivalant of Open Source and I don't see Microsoft pushing products in the Linux realm without a profit margin being returned to them.I think the only reason you see other large companies doing this is because they are direct competitors to MS in other areas and this allows them to fight market share wars on multiple fronts.Still if the anti-trust guys had split MS in two we would have seen all of this sooner.
Re: Microsoft Linux available in 2004
well you guys may have a point that when profitability is there the microsoft colors will change. i just see that as a VERY difficult move for a company that has called open source a "cancer" and the like. why would anyone buy an MS product to run on Linux when Microsoft is or HAS been in the past bashing it. might happen, but if it did it would simply be another case of the amazing hypocrisy of the corporate world.
