Trent Lott needs to go

I know the stories about Trent Lott tripping over his own words are everywhere right now but here is my take. He needs to resign. Mr. Lotts remarks about the good ole days and how great it would be of former KKK member and senior Senator from South Carolina Strom Thurmond had won the presidential election as a "Dixiecrat" in 1948 are unbelievable and unforgivable (and as it turns out he has made the statements on multiple occasions, its not just a slip). The remarks Lott made are after all just that, only verbal remarks, but they demonstrate his mindset and the depth of his stupidity and ignorance. This is NOT a man we need leading the Senate.

Strom Thurmond is and was an incredible disgrace and embarrassment to the United States. Mr. Thurmond was a proponent of segregation and racism and a full fledged member of the KKK. He is a even a disgrace to the term good ole boy. It is amazing that Thurmond gets elected every time, but thats another matter, that matter goes to the intelligence of South Carolinians in general.

Many other people have also called for the resignation of Mr. Lott based on his support of Strom remarks. Mr. Lotts remarks are especially disturbing because he supports Mr. Thurmond as he WAS back in his hey days of white supremacy bullshit. The way that I differ from most is that I think the REPUBLICANS should demand that Mr. Lott step down, rather than all this static from the Democrats.

Its in the best interest of the Republicans to handle this matter quickly, get it over with and get Trent Lott the hell out. For more see the linked NYTimes article.

update
I originally posted in this story that Strom was a Senator from NORTH Carolina, he is from SOUTH. I apologize for my mistake. My own being a dumbass about the state doesnt really change any of the point of the story, but again, apologies to North Carolinians.   Lotts Praise for Thurmond Echoed His Words of 1980: NYTimes

"It is amazing that Thurmond gets elected every time, but thats another matter, that matter goes to the intelligence of North Carolinians in general. "

Before you go questioning the intelligence of "North Carolinians in general," perhaps you should question your own intelligence.

Strom Thurmond represents SOUTH carolina.

Re: Trent Lott needs to go

Hold on a minute, there is a BIG difference between what Sen. Byrd said and what Trent Lott said. I believe the Byrd quote is:

“There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word.

While I think this was probably an inappropriate comment, it wasn't explicitly supporting racism or racist policies/people. What Trent Lott said was quite different.

He said on TWO occasions (back in 1980, and again this year) that we would all be better off if Strom Thurmond - a man who fillibustered for over 24 hours in an attempt to prevent his racist constituants from having to sit next to black people on the bus and at the lunch counter - was president!! This is completely unacceptable. Strom Thurmond has the blood of American citizens on his hands and deserves no honor whatsoever. The fact that Trent Lott would even speak in commemoration of his disgusting "career" is offensive enough. The president comment was insult to injury.

I agree with Atrox, the people of South Carolina should be ashamed for keeping this bigot in office for as long as they have. (and I'm sure he meant SOUTH carolina ;-) )

Re: Trent Lott needs to go

The fact of the matter is, and I agree with Atrox's original post, Thurmond is an embarrasment. He represents everything that was wrong with the United States in the first part of the last century.

I can understand giving the old bastard a retirement party, but if I was a Republican I woundn't even broach the subject of praising his "accomplishments" or his record.

Byrd of Lott, I am still in awe that someone could rise to the level of prominence of a US Congressman/Senator -- hell a damned janitor at the DoJ building for that matter -- and not have enough common sense to filter your remarks through your head before you make them.

and... the fool will not be fooled again.

Re: Trent Lott needs to go

Actually, on another note, I had a friend in college (10 years ago, mind you) who was from SC and we were mocking Strom. Anyway, one of the things he was talking about was how the people just talk about "Senator". That's Senator's house. Senator came here for lunch the other day. He is such an institution he's not even a man with a title, the title has become his nomnative.

Re: Trent Lott needs to go

yeah i relaized that right after i posted the story but have not been able to get back to the PC today to modify it, my profound apologies to north carolinians. i was an admitted dumbass, point taken, and got the north/south incorrect. thanks for pointing it out, i have corrected the story.

Re: Trent Lott needs to go

actually I have heard of Senator Byrd. I dont agree that it is a valid comparison, but I do think that Byrd is also a jackass.

Re: Trent Lott needs to go

cehck this out - http://www.oliverwillis.com/02archives/003448.php

its a bunch of crap to lump bush and lott in already, etc, its political advertising at its best (and that means its not at all accurate or having to do with any issues) but its still pretty funny.

if the republicans DONT dump lott, they can expect MUCH more of the same.
