Tuvalu is a tiny string of atolls in the Pacific Ocean. They have made news before because they sold the rights to those fancy .tv domain names that the big registrars now push as a "premium" service.
The news this time is far more serious and frankly very bleak. Tuvalu is 13 feet above sea level AT ITS HIGHEST point. Scientists have stated that sea levels have risen in the past 50 years and they predict that they will continue to rise.
While Tuvalu was probably never very far above sea level and thus not a good place to decide to live; it was once not as ominous as it is now. The encroachment of the sea is due to global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps. This year the ice melt has been worse than any other in recorded history and thats bad news for Tuvalu.
Global warming is real, whatever the factors (the causes are a DIFFERENT argument, however people living in reality cannot deny that global warming IS taking place, there is a GREAT DEAL of indisputable scientifically verified factual evidence that global warming is real, those that continue to deny its existence do so out of stupidity or speciousness). Tuvalu is a very tangible case of what *one* the effects of global warming can be.

Re: Island Nation of Tuvalu in Jeopardy: BBC
These folks shouldn't worry too much. Referencing Kevin Costner's character in "Waterworld", after the polar caps melt people will evolve/de-evolve to get gills again. These people should be fine.

awesome response, thats all i have to say.
Re: Island Nation of Tuvalu in Jeopardy: BBC
Referencing same pre-historical work: even the ones that don't get gills should be OK, because they will have at least evolved/de-evolved enough that they can breathe the little bit'o uncompressed air in a bubble for really, long periods of time. Mind, this air is so dense that water at depth can not compress it. Gives a whole new meaning to "Check out her lungs!"
