Georgia makes the Daily Show

Tagged:
The Daily Show recently did a piece on the great state of Georrgia. Specifically the focus was on a rally that the "Sons of Confederate Veterans" had at the capitol in support of bringing back a state flag that had a large confederate emblem on it (the stars and bars) AND the state governments decision to repeal a state law that forbids "fornication" for unmarried people. The flag thing is indeed making Georgia look incredibly dumb. The racists want the flag to be the emblem of the confederacy (the emblem that the confederate states used during the civil war in which the major tenet of the fight was the right to own slaves). The racists are flat our wrong and are not willing to admit their own racism. At least cop to it if you are going to fight for it? In fact this is a HUGE issue in Georgia. Georgia has a new governor and legislature in at least some part because the past governor got rid of the racist flag without letting people vote on the issue. It is a "racist" flag, no question, no debate. The racists like to state that its "heritage not hate" that they support but that is fallacious. The flag is a symbol of hate, an ANTI American symbol (uh, the word is CONfederate) and a symbol of an era that was an enormous disgrace. The "heritage" people are wrong when they claim they want the confederate flag back because the flag they want was INTRODUCED in Georgia in 1956. If these people really wanted history they would elect to go with a flag that dates from the time they SAY they support? Check out the flags that have flown over Georgia and note the STATE flags BEFORE 1956. Those are the HISTORIC flags of the state of Georgia, not one introduced by the good ole boy racists long AFTER the civil war was over. On the second issue of allowing consensual sex by adults Georgia is right on time. As the Daily Show put it, the 1900's were too early to allow that, now is the time. Southern states constantly amaze me. States like Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and Lousiana can always seem to come up with a riduculous sexual, racist or religious policy, law or view. The south quite frankly needs to get educated and grow up. People in the south need to make their voices heard, vote and get rid of ignorance and hate. Oh wait, sorry, thats how the south got the ignorance and hate, my bad.

Re: Georgia makes the Daily Show

A couple of points. 1) At least they repealed the law about fornication. Give a little props there. 2) Agree 100% with the flag issue. HOWEVER, the last governor did pull a fast one.I fully support the end result, but did it under the cover of darkness, not for some grand ideal, but to ensure that big-ticket sources of money, (ala NCAA tourneys, Tech conferences, etc.) didn't pull out of GA (Atlanta). He knew it'd be messy, and didn't wanna lose the cashola. I believe the new guy is gonna offer up a referendum on the thing, (a non-binding one IIRC.) As a resident of the state, it is my fervent desire, hope, and wish that this referendum does show that we Georgians aren't all jackasses and the thing is put to bed by common vote. Kinda funny, as one who abhors the abuse of power without the people's input (as I take it that you are, 'trox,) seems like you'd mention Barnes' fast one.

Re: Georgia makes the Daily Show

I totally agree that Barnes was an idiot for what he did and that the people of the state should have input on the flag. Totally. That said I also should have mentioned it but truly was not even thinking about how we got the current flag but rather the issue of having the previous flag in the first place and the "support" by the groups like the sons of conf vets. I think the entire thing is a ridiculous issue to be discussing in 2003, but thats Georgia.

Re: Georgia makes the Daily Show

As an ex-Georgia resident, I'm not too sure how a referendum would come out. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the anti segregationist confederate flag wins the popular vote. It might just be that Barnes was trying to change the image of the State in the only way he could (by avoiding a popular vote). If you have a referendum and lose then everyone in Georgia really looks like a jackass, as opposed to pre-vote when you can at least say - those people who were here in the 50 and 60's were jackasses. You get 15 minutes outside of 285 and you're in a different world. (Unless you are heading up 400, then after 15 minutes your probably still on the on ramp)

Re: Georgia makes the Daily Show

LOL, awesome. i live up 400, right on. i dont think the racists would win the vote. maybe, it might be close, but i dont think they would win. it would be a disgrace if they did thats for sure, but at least it would be an honest cop to it, voters decided, disgrace.
