Re: LinuxWorld Open Source Excellence Awards

This post reminded me... anyone here with experience with Ximian Evolution? The company that I'm working for is using Lotus Notes with money budgeted this year to convert over to Exchange. I would like to present them with some alternative solutions. What open source Exchange alternative are people happy with?

Re: LinuxWorld Open Source Excellence Awards

I have tried Evolution, but it wasn't quite enough to sell me on it. The big boon to Evolution is that you can purchase the "Exchange Gateway" and get all the "exchangey" features on a Linux client. SuSe OpenExchange is "all the functionality" of Exchange, but its a web based thing. I dunno. Doesn't seem as nice to me. If you are looking for something else, try Samsung Contact (http://www.samsungcontact.com/en/). It is a complete Exchange clone for Linux-- talks to Outlook just the same, has all the Exchange collaboration features, etc. This may be the most promising product in a while on that front.

Re: LinuxWorld Open Source Excellence Awards

Despite what coop says I hear that SuSE OpenExchange is really really nice. I have not used it myself, but I would say that I consider web based to be an ADVANTAGE rather than a DISADVANTAGE assuming it meets all the requirements. What I mean is that it doesnt require another app on users machines, thats nice. You might want to check out the eval and see what you think. (Disclaimer, I have heard good things about it, such as this award, but I have never used it myself, I use a home grown Sendmail wSMTP_ATUH/MimeDefang/SpamAssasin/SquirrelMail with Calendaring setup, it works and there are several hundred users on it, but its a bear to maintain and keep up with, a nice package would be great but I use the aformentioned because its free.)
