Man, again, despite what all those certainly non-biased-yet-paid-for-by-Microsoft "think tanks" and "reports" say, Linux proves to be more cost effective and more productive than other OSes in the real world. Maybe this real world thing is not all its cracked up to be, I mean can some place that bestows the title "think tank" on itself ever really be wrong?
Ok, that new thing called sarcasm aside, the National Weather Service has been using at least some Linux for some time. The Linux machines they have used "increase productivity" and "decreased costs". They are a mostly HP Unix shop now but they plan to fully migrate to Linux ove the next few years, based on their current Linux usage success. In the machines in which they already run Linux they say they chose Linux because of its "advanced security features, portability between different platforms, and the availability of software packages." In addition they mention that cost is a big factor, "They're significant savings," says the CIO "Up to a 3-to-1 savings ratio."
