IBM has inked a deal with the government to provide desktops and servers (900 and 160 respectively), running Linux, to the National Weather Service. The change appears to be performance related. There arent many technical details in the linked Forbes article but it does state that "refresh times" on their "data-intensive" apps are cut by a factor of 4 on the new systems. The systems being replaced were HP-UX.
