From the cool as heck software category comes an entry from NASA, Maestro. Apparently everyone already knows about this except for me, yet even at the risk of reiteration I am posting it anyway, because its extra cool.
Maestro is the actual software NASA uses to control the Mars rover Spirit. Thats right, you can take the controls if you feel like it, you just have to clear your mouse clicks with Houston. Ok, so you dont ACTUALLY control Spirit eh, but you also download data files from the real mission and you can click around within those!
And this is again, the actual program used to contol the rover. Well that and that taskbar weather thingy that shows up after you download porn.
For more see the linked NewsForge article and the linked Maestro site itself. And note, NASA has revs for all sorts of machines, Windows, OS X, Solaris and Linux. Enjoying NASAs Maestro on your Linux desktop
